Don Simon, "Summer Kick Off Mix"

There are exponentially more mixes made during the summer months than any other season of the year, for obvious and good reason: July through September is hot, sunny, marks the fiscal year's halfway point, and is endowed with far more galas, BBQs, rooftop pool mixers, and and offers a much-anticipated excuse to whip out the blender and make some margaritas! With all the festivities, tannings, and general good will, mixtapes are inevitable.

BBBD is very impressed by don Simon's "Summer Kick Off Mix." The Swedish producer/DJ put together an hour-long, thirteen-track set that features a substantial number of his compatriots' work (i.e. Lykke Li, Sally Shapiro) and plenty of artists one wouldn't expect to find on such a light-hearted party jam (i.e. Kelly Polar, Booka Shade, Justus Köhncke). Somhow he brings it altogether with a distinctly summertime aesthetic and tasteful energy that doesn't overwhelm or exhaust. This is perfect. Download it, please. A tracklist can be found after the jump.

Tokyo Fun Party, Digiki, and SoccerBoy

I'm thinking this post might be better suited as three separate blurbs, but since all three subjects are closely related and interdependent, putting together one mega piece is better than splitting it up.

Okay. Here we go.

Tokyo Fun Party is a Tokyo-based record label owned and operated by a pretty intriguing international crew of DJs and musicians. SoccerBoy (AKA Takashi Otagiri) started the company and quickly brought on Paris-born, Tokyo-dwelling Digiki (MySpace) to do A&R and generally kill it at the T.F.P. club nights (Juliana).

Digiki is truly a jack of all trades. The guy co-founded 101 Tokyo when he wasn't compiling his stellar Polypunk mix series, recording his own material, DJ'ing parties, and collaborating with a myriad other artists. Now, Digiki's got a whole pile of new material out, with another batch on the horizon.

Dense Music is, for the most part, a collection of remixes of tunes off the last LP, Beat Vacation. Two singles have been released so far ("Draftpunk" and "Pancakes"). Below are mixed samples of each single. You can find way more information on both (including just how to buy the things) over here.

Back to SoccerBoy, though. This guy has been tearing it up in Tokyo for a good while now, injecting an Ed Banger dose of grittiness and brashness to the otherwise hyper-melodious and bubblegummy dance scene in Japan. His stuff is a mix of everything under the sun ... a little Diplo rhythmic fun tossed around, a little Girl Talk mashing dropped in, a little Justice-esque rager sprinkled about. He can't stay still. Check out a mix he put together below as well as two remixes he did (so, so good). You can catch more remixes here and more mixes here. Now you totally want to go to Tokyo, right?

BBBD Muxtape No. 4

Since BBBD's founding in 2004, we've debuted a number of new "columns," "features," podcasts, and the like ... none of which really seemed to work. (Yeah, believe it or not, there was a BBBD "radio program"; likewise, we attempted a myriad weekly round-ups and plenty of other nice-try-maybe-next-time regulars.)

We're practically guaranteeing that our Muxtape series will remain constant, though.

Check it out! We've just put together BBBD Muxtape No. 4! The eight-track mix features Zongamin, Annie, new Munk, Human Highway, Golden Bug, and all the other greats you've been itching to tune into! Enjoy, loyal readers.

New Muxtape!

In an attempt to monopolize Muxtape, BBBD has uploaded yet another killer mix that features primarily stuff you won't hear on this blog. (While we like to support the unsigned and under-appreciated, there's absolutely nothing wrong with, you know, rockin' out to some Vines every once in a while.)

Listen to it! You don't even have to pay.

Stereolab, the Vines, Pete & the Pirates, Littl'ans, Late of the Pier, Santogold ... they're all up there. It's 1 PM PST/4 PM EST -- there's plenty of time to chill before the work week hits again. Listen.

Get Familiar @ Fabric London, May 2

BBBD has yet to attend any Fabric club night in London, but from what we hear and from what we've got on compact disc, we know that the parties are not to be missed. Someday ... someday.

Friday, May 2 is going to be -- as usual -- a killer at Fabriclive. Switch and Sinden will be presenting Get Familiar, and boy do they have one hell of a lineup planned. Room One will feature Joe Goddard (Hot Chip), Sinden, A-Trak, and J33; Room Two will hold Surkin, Para One, Curses!, Orgasmic, Bobmo, Das Glow, and Jean Nipon; Room Three will feature DJ Fresh and Rusko. Wow. It's like a mini-festival crammed into a gigantic warehouse. But what else would you expect? Really ...

If you're in London, you can pick up tickets right over here. If you're not, here's the consolation prize: a 90-minute Fabriclive mix by Rusko. It's a banger, so get ready to have a few neurons destroyed while listening to this one.

New Powerblytt Release

BBBD's favorite Bergen record label, Powerblytt (MySpace) has a new CD coming out called Powerblytt Myths Volume 1 with "tracks by the Work remixed by Njaal, Oslo-based electro-poppers Frost remixed by Skatebård, Swedish avant-soul poster boy Juvelen remixed by Krazy Fiesta, and one by Bergen's new-kid-on-the-block, Njaal." Sounds good, good, good to us!

The Work -- the owners and operators of Powerblytt and its affiliated club -- were kind enough to send a mini-mix of the compilation our way, so check it out below and be sure to grab the thing when it's out! From the stellar mini-mix, the 12" is bound to be packed with disco-infused ragers, techno-y bangers, Daft Punk-esque guitar jams, and a bit of everything in between.

As a perpetual trend-setter (ahem), BBBD has decided to put together a Muxtape. Please enjoy it! The tunes included are favorites that won't be found on the blog itself as they're too "mainstream" or overly covered elsewhere.

And yes, Phantom Planet is on the list, and yes, the California pop band was my favorite artist of the week at forty-six listens. Geez. I swear this is a phase. I hope.

DFA Dance Party @ MoMA Mixes Online!

Now this is a treat! DFA DJ'd a dance party at the MoMA in NYC a while back in conjunction with the opening night of Color Chart: Reinventing Color, 1950 to Today. The event was supposed to be really fun (the four DJ sets featured were by Juan Maclean, T&T [Tim Goldsworthy & Tim Sweeney], Holy Ghost!, and Justin Miller & Jacques Renault, after all!), and those of us who didn't attend felt hopelessly left out.

Fortunately, DFA and MoMA has the wherewithal and foresight to record the entire event (about four hours in total), and you can now grab the mixes right here for no charge! Quite a deal. The sets are really good ... exciting doses of funk, soul, disco -- the usual DFA madness -- prolonged for a stunning four hours. Be sure to download the MP3 files.

Mr. No Music 03

One of NYC's best independent record labels, Music Related, has been offering some fantastic mixes through Mr. No Music since March of this year, and judging by the series' third installment, they'll only get better!

April's eleven-track episode was mixed live by Pandatone (AKA Music Related's dedicated founder) and it shines through. The thing's fifty-minutes long and has a smooth, organic quality to it that you can't get without (a) being pretty damn talented and (b) using good DJ equipment. This is no hack job!

Featured artists include the Glimmers, Glass Candy, Lindstrøm, OOIOO (the BBBD favorites), and a few others. Overall, this is a great mix and most definitely worth listening to. Get it! Get it!

Max Barbaria & DJ Vibe, "Love Your Family" Mixtape

BBBD isn't the place for mixtapes, so consider this a bizarre exception to that unofficial rule.

Max Barbaria is one cool dude. As one of the members of the LOLA New York fashion label collective, he dabbles in his fair share of that world while also working with DJ Vibe on a series of mixtapes that they distribute and sell to various boutiques in and around New York City. The latest mixtape, Love Your Family, is ... eighty minutes of blissed-out glitchy funk, bass-heavy ghetto-tech, Italo-disco, space electro (God, I could bullshit genres all day long), and everything else under the sun. It's a jammer, it's a rager, it's one hell of a ride. I wish I wasn't confined to this stupid work chair, as I would be boogieing all up and down the street. Or something. I'll save it for tonight; this is as good as reason as any to rock out on a Tuesday!

The mix is unique in that it incorporates a whole bunch of original material that Max and DJ Vibe produced on their own. Below is one of those tunes hoested by me and a few zShare lines (my favorite!) Don't kill my bandwidth folks ... only one download per person (grin).

The mixtape is being offered as a super cool package, too ... if you're sick of 256 kbps encoded audio, pick up the special box-set containing the disc, a LOLA T-shirt, and Max & DJ Vibe Wayfayer shades at the LOLA shop (?) -- good deal!

Buffetlibre DJs Vebena Rewind 2

I'll admit ignorance here: I'm still in the dark when it comes to Buffetlibre. I understand that the Buffetlibre DJs are a group of Spanish DJs that tour around and make mixes and do the usual Internet promotion thing, but I don't understand their story, their history, their raison d'etre, or anything along those lines.

But that's fine since I only want to report one simple thing here: Buffetlibre DJs latest mixes -- Verbena Selected 2 and Verbena Rewind 2. I've yet to listen to both in their entireties, but they're rocking so far, and I highly recommend them. Selected is a modern compilation of unusual, rare, and all-around killer electronic tracks, many of which are remixes. Grab it here and check out the tracklist after the jump.

Rewind is, to me, more interesting as it's an 80s-themed two-part mix that I actually contributed a song to! Each song was selected by a blogger, from I Heart Comix to Big Stereo to Disco Dust. The idea of blogger-generated mix that lives online is pretty compelling, and it actually turned out quite well!

Grab part one here and part two here. I contributed Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Behind the Mask" to the mix -- find it on part two (tracklist after the jump).

Perhaps that's indicative of what Leaf & Giraffe will wind up sounding like, but you never know ...

THRILLS

Posts like this one aren't really in the established BBBD style, but this DJ from Seattle, THRILLS is pretty good, and he deserves a nice post.

The Washington native has been behind turntables since he was in high school, and his pure skill and sheer talent does really show throw in both his original tracks and remixes. A turntable expert ... mix master ... synthetic mad scientist. I don't know what I'm talking about at all here, so I'll cut this [dumb] post here and just request you to download the below songs and judge for yourself. So lost.

Also, THRILLS released a very cool mix -- Vinyl Mix from The Vortex c89.5FM -- in October of last year. There're some really cool tunes on that thing, too, and listening to it will probably give you a good idea of just how good a DJ this dude is.

New Monsterk7 Release

The European label, Monsterk7, was formed for pretty ... unorthodox reasons. The "first aim is to restore into favor the audio tape, this phonographic medium sacrificed on the altar of modernity and supplanted by the almost dead CD." Bizarre, right?

I've not actually seen any of the company's tape releases, but I'm sure they're great. For the most part, they release digital compilations, the most recent of which is called Face A/Face B (like a tape -- get it?) "Side A" is all electronic while "Side B" is all folk. Monsterk7 obviously subscribes to a pretty broad definition of "electronic" and "folk": the electronic tracks are all indeed synthetic in nature, but some of them err more towards the IDM side of things while others sound like clips from an all-night rave. I'm more of a "Side A" fan ... the "folk" songs are easy-going, light, and very enjoyable. The best tune is Orouni's "Dead Cat (Milk & Fruit Juice Cover)." It's endearing, simple, and just makes ya feel good.

But enough of my yackin' -- grab the high-quality compilation here and check out the Orouni song from "Side A" below!

Proyecto Batidora by Buffetlibre

This is a new one for me so let's hope I get the facts straight (but keep in mind that I'm working with a lot of Spanish text here).

Okay, Buffet Libre is a music blog/magazine that -- while I've not investigated too much -- looks really, really solid. Good coverage, good topics, interesting collaborations, good recommendations. Right up my alley!

So ... Buffet Libre just put together a killer mix of remixes called Proyecto Batidora #147. Or at least I think it's #147. All you need to know is that P.B. is a series and B.L. represents a whole pile of DJs who tour around Europe as a group. I'm going to stop trying to explain here ... I'm sure one of you lovely readers will (a) catch mistakes and (b) amend my post, anyway. So check the comments, folks!

Download the mix right here. It features remixes of the likes of Das Pop, the Go! Team, SHITDISCO, the Toxic Avenger, and a few more. Below is my favorite remix -- Mojib's edit of the Go! Team's "Grip Like A Vice."

BBBD Best Undiscovered Tracks Of 2007 (Part 5 of 5)

I feel as though I sold myself short with my statistical sum-up of the year. It was a little bit too straightforward and was only an indication of what I most frequently listened to over the course of the year rather than what I really liked in the end. There is a difference!

I now present to you the fifth (and final) installation of BBBD's Best Undiscovered Tracks List of 2007. (So now I've done artists and unknown acts, but still no favorite albums or "mainstream" independent favorites -- we shall see what the future holds!)

You can get the ZIP of all 25 of my favorite tunes here or download the MP3s one-by-one over the course of five days.

Ungdomskulen - Ordinary Son
Bergen, Norway's Ungdomskulen will make more hair pop up on your chest than a straight double shot of whiskey on the rocks. Play them loud. They are the intelligence of Frank Zappa ("pop music is too much of a constrain for my genius) and the stoic metal fun of Black Sabbath. Priceless. Why didn't this band spring to the scene sooner after the demise of Test Icicles?

Vincent Vincent & the Villains - I'm On My Own
Vincent Vincent & the Villains started that whole rockabilly/old school rock trend that we're experiencing today. Step aside imitators, Vincent Vincent & the Villains did it first. They did it best. Had I made a similar list of undiscovered tracks for 2006, these guys would have topped it. Luckily, they released another single this year and now that I've gotten my act together, they're on a list! Woot!

White Rabbits - The Plot
Crafty, smart pop music that draws from a plethora of world and traditional musics is so in right now. White Rabbits preempted that trend and got us all on the band wagon. Give them their due respects.

White Williams - New Violence
I'm from Cleveland originally. White Williams is our pride and joy; our Beck and Pavement all in one ball. He makes me feel proud to hail from such a depressed industrial city. Keep churning out them hits, White. We love you!

Whitey - Wrap It Up
Whitey is the best thing that could happen to the British music scene today. I would post everything from his "lost" album, Great Shakes, if I could/if it wasn't supposed to officially be a 2008 release, but alas, this is all we've got for now. His organic, analog style of dance music is a highly sought-after musical commodity these days -- we need more liek Whitey. Funky, rocky, foot-stomping beats, fat bass lines, and head bobbing guitar/keyboard hooks. Ahhhh ... too good!

BBBD Best Undiscovered Tracks Of 2007 (Part 4 of 5)

I feel as though I sold myself short with my statistical sum-up of the year. It was a little bit too straightforward and was only an indication of what I most frequently listened to over the course of the year rather than what I really liked in the end. There is a difference!

I now present to you the forth installation of BBBD's Best Undiscovered Tracks List of 2007. (So now I've done artists and unknown acts, but still no favorite albums or "mainstream" independent favorites -- we shall see what the future holds!)

You can get the ZIP of all 25 of my favorite tunes here or download the MP3s one-by-one over the course of five days.

the Dodos - Fools
Innocuous enough name, right? San Francisco's the Dodos are formidable indie-folk players, though. The seamlessly meld the wackiness of Animal Collective with rhythms that almost robotically trudge along and summery Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies. Oh, and they throw in quite a few mean swooning melodies that will ease you into submission. The Dodos are coming.

the Mules - We're Good People (CSS Remix)
The Mules are a minimalist Talking Heads displaced thirty years forward to a present-day London. They're nerdy and clean-cut, yet exceptionally rhythmic and musically creative. Unfortunately, the band's best song is a CSS remix of "We're Good People." Hate it when that happens ...

the Rumble Strips - Alarm Clock
The Rumble Strips are from the U.K. They are like Madness circa One Step Beyond prefab for 2007. They jive, man.

the Tough Alliance - Something Special
You're still not tired of hearing about the Tough Alliance from BBBD? You shouldn't be. The Swedish duo is just as fresh as it was when their music graced
